The CDWP Summer Institute: A Unique and Powerful Professional Development Experience
Teachers who participate in the Capital District Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute routinely report that it is the most powerful and useful professional development experience they have had. For example, 100% of teachers who participated in the institute in 2010 reported that “the quality and value of this institute was better than other (non-NWP) professional development activities I participated in recently.” (From an independent survey of summer institute participants conducted by Inverness Associates.)
As a result of their participation in the CDWP summer institute, teachers feel more confident in their ability to teach writing effectively to a wide range of students, develop a deeper understanding of writing, and gain new respect for themselves as education professionals.
Here are some comments from participants in CDWP’s Invitational Summer Institute:
“The Summer Institute has been by far one of the most powerful professional development opportunities I have ever participated in as a teacher. The institute rekindled my love of writing and became a safe place where we could discuss, write and share with one another.”
“The Summer Institute provided me the opportunity to realize the importance of my belief that writing is an integral part of the learning process. I believe that my experience will result in improved student writing, learning, thinking and reading. I am more dedicated and motivated to bring and share the knowledge I have been privileged to develop these past four weeks back to my fellow teachers.”
“The most important thing that I have gained through the SI would be a vastly different understanding of writing instruction. I believe that my understanding of writing and its purpose has grown, and this will greatly reflect my teaching practices in the coming year.”
“Over the past four weeks, I have gained a new sense of confidence in myself as a writer and a teacher of writing. This new confidence and all that I have learned will have a great impact on my students.”
